Guidelines On Writing A Critical Rhetorical Analysis Essay

If you are tasked with writing a critical rhetorical analysis essay, it is important that you take the time to properly plan.

The first step to any writing assignment is to review the information or assignment details. Make sure that you thoroughly comprehend what is required of you before you begin on any task. If you have any questions about your assignment you should make sure to ask your teacher for clarification immediately.

Once you have done that, it is time to consider a topic. If you have not been assigned a topic, you should try and review course notes, lecture material, and recently reviewed magazines or documentaries in search of a topic which inspires you.

Make a list of the things that you still need to know about your topic and what things you already know. The things that you do not yet know or still need to answer are the things that should constitute the majority of your research.

As you research for your work, it is important that you find reputable sources. Reputable sources are those sources which come from a peer reviewed journal or a book. You want to know who the author is and what credibility they have. As you are reading information from different sources, write down any key ideas you have on notecards. As you work with notecards, make sure you also write down any related bibliographic data when you write down a key statistic or fact. If you write down the corresponding data early on it will make it significantly easier for you when it comes time to prepare your reference page and make your in text citations.

As you finish your research and note taking, it is time to cultivate an outline. The outline is an important component to any writing. It is what helps you to keep your thoughts organized and to literally see what changes have taken place and what else you need to explore within the confines of your essay. You can write down each key idea you have and then locate the supporting evidence, placing it beneath. It is in your best interest to create an outline before you begin any writing task, as the outline will allow you to play around with the tangible order of your arguments and structure. It will act as a guide which you can follow while you go through each draft of your essay.
